Shooting star! Mercedes-Benz powers back into the Top 10, but which popular brands is it outselling?

Mercedes-Benz is back as a Top 10 selling brand in the Australian new vehicle market, the three-pointed star finishing eighth in the June sales race, and now threatening the likes of Subaru and Nissan on the year-to-date (YTD) leader board.

With 3909 registrations for the month, Benz placed just behind the booming MG, and managed to put its nose in front of Subaru in ninth position (3575) and Isuzu Ute in 10th (3457).

Not surprisingly, the result was SUV-led, the top-seller being the mid-size GLC (now in run-out mode) on 856 units, up by 198.3 per cent over June 2021, with substantial contributions from the smaller GLA (554, +24.5%), and larger GLE (410, +41.9%) models.

Plus, the recently released sixth-generation C-Class (456, -14.9%) continues the medium sedan's role as a mainstay model, appealing to more traditional Mercedes buyers.

The question now is whether the premium German brand can consolidate and improve its position, with a top 10 finish for the year in a shrinking, supply-constrained new vehicle market.

Not surprisingly, the result was SUV-led, the top-seller being the mid-size GLC.

Continuing interest in the relatively new EQ EV line-up would say yes, the EQA (28, -20.0%) and EQC (31, +158.3%) in particular continuing to build sales momentum.

And there are more electrified models heading our way before year-end in the shape of the compact seven-seat EQB SUV, and the EQE sedan, spearheaded by the performance Mercedes-AMG EQE 53.
