At least three new Jeep models have been confirmed for reveal within the next year, with more likely to come according to reports from the US.

Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa confirmed during the international debut of the new 2024 Wagoneer S EV that plug-in-hybrid ‘4xe’ versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will show up soon, as well as a new generation of the mid-size Jeep Cherokee SUV.

According to Car and Driver, Filosa said a new mainstream mid-size SUV was on the way and that the media "could probably guess what it will be called".

The last Jeep Cherokee rolled off the production line in February 2023, and during its absence from Jeep’s line-up executives have been vague on mentioning whether it would return or not.

Even relatively soon after its discontinuation, CarsGuide was met with hesitation from Jeep’s Head of Design Mark Allen when asked about the gap left in the brand’s range, and whether it would be filled.

In Australia, Jeep Australia Head of Product Rick Crichton told CarsGuide at the local launch of the Grand Cherokee that he expected some customers who were “looking for that medium SUV might find themselves stepping up into a five seat”, referring to the Grand Cherokee being launched at the time.

At the time, the Cherokee was available from $54,050 before on-road costs, while the Grand Cherokee five-seater started from $77,950.

While Jeep is a brand undergoing plenty of change, it might still surprise some to know that the Cherokee itself (the Grand Cherokee is a different model) hasn’t been the brand’s biggest seller for quite some time, outsold convincingly by the similarly named large SUV.

CEO Antonio Filosa didn’t provide any more details for the replacement Cherokee, but also confirmed new PHEV versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, which aren’t yet available here in Australia.

Filosa’s comments about being able to “guess what it will be called” in regards to the Cherokee are interesting, given the brand was engaged in conversations with Native American Cherokee Nation leaders who had called on Jeep to change the model’s name.

Jeep continued to use the name on both the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee.
