Forget the Tesla Cybertruck, Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T, the LDV GST is set to be the first all-electric 4x4 ute in Australia

The Maxus GST Pick Up concept is headed to Australia in 2024 wearing the LDV badge.

If at first you don't succeed, try again with more power and a tougher look.

That's the strategy from Chinese commercial brand LDV, who has announced it will launch its second all-electric ute in the Australian market in 2024. Officially known as the GST Pick Up in China, the new tough truck was unveiled at the 2023 Shanghai Motor Show and displayed a bigger, bolder look and dual-motor powertrain that distinguish it from the current eT60.

LDV Australia, which is part of the Ateco Group, has sold only 60 examples of the eT60 year-to-date to mostly commercial and fleet operators, as the lack of four-wheel drive, power and capability have turned off private buyers.

The GST, which will get a new name in Australia for obvious reasons, sits on a new platform compared to the eT60, but not much else is confirmed about the new addition to the LDV line-up.

The concept is powered by quad-motors and a semi-solid-state battery, which allowed the company to claim 1000-horsepower (745kW) and a 1000km driving range. The production version is unlikely to boast such impressive numbers, but critically it is expected to have at least dual-motors - one on each axle - to provide 4x4 capability missing from the eT60.

According to a leak from the Chinese patent office, the new pick-up measures up to 5680mm long, 1809mm high and at least 1900mm, making it longer and wider than a Ford Ranger.

The GST concept features a dramatic and futuristic interior, with a single huge horizontal screen, flat-bottom steering wheel with cut-out top and four-seat layout. These are unlikely to carry over to the production version, which will likely have a more practical five-seat cabin and less attention-grabbing technology than the concept.

An internal combustion engine version, likely a diesel engine, is also reportedly under development but it has not been confirmed for Australian release.

LDV also revealed a facelifted version of the T60 ute has been released in China, and Ateco is working on bringing it to Australia. It features an updated cabin and a new variant with independent rear suspension, which the local operation said is a priority.

More detailed timing, pricing and specification details on the new LDV GST Pick Up won't be revealed until closer to its launch in 2024.
