Holden Commodore: What's a good replacement?

I'm looking for advice in regard to purchasing a new car. I currently have a 2003 VY Commodore SV8, and I am looking for something a little smaller and more economical to run.

The new car needs to be suitable for a family of four and will be mainly used for commuting to work and to sporting events on the weekend.

Ideally I would like a car that is good value and also has a reasonable level of performance and handling. I have been looking for something around the $30,000 range.

I quite like the Skoda Octavia Wagon, Honda Civic, and I am impressed with the new Subaru Impreza. I have also considered the ever-reliable Toyota Camry, and the Car of the Year, the Volkswagen Tiguan.

What car and, in particular, what model would you recommend to suit a family that is good value and also has reasonable performance and handling?

All of the cars you name meet your criteria of size, economy, performance and handling.

You could also add the Mazda3 and 6 to the list.

Of all of those I would nominate the Camry as the great all-rounder.
