Peugeot 306 fuel experiment

The manual says I should use higher-octane petrol in my 2002 Peugeot 306, but I'd like to make a performance and economy comparison while using regular or higher octane petrol. Is it ok to carry out this experiment, or will it damage the engine?

You can do the experiment, but be careful to observe for any pinging from the engine. If you do hear it stop the experiment and go back to the higher octane fuel.
