The BMW 3 Series 1997 prices range from $2,090 for the basic trim level Sedan to $12,870 for the top of the range Convertible High Line.
It's unlikely to be the battery, as you've proved when the fully charged one didn't fix the problem. BMWs of that model had problems with the ignition switch and I would suspect that that's your problem. Next time it happens rapidly turn the switch on and off several times and see if you get any response. If you do it's the switch that is your problem.

THE 1997 model was an upgrade of the E36 introduced in 1991. There were two 328i coupes -- the Executive and the High Line. The Executive boasted air, dual airbags, ABS, alloys, CD sound, cruise, alarm, fog lamps, leather wheel and trim, and traction control. The High Line added sports seats. They go through brakes and tyres and can have radiator problems.
