A flying top speed record for a rotary has just been set over the half mile

By Mitchell TulkMitchell Tulk

This rotary rocket has put a GT-R to shame while going on to break a record.

We all know that despite its size, the Wankel rotary engine is an incredibly powerful engine capable of huge outputs of power, especially when modified.

This FD RX-7 is a prime example, housing an imported triple-rotor turbo engine from Japan, the lightweight sports coupe spits out an incredible 835hp (623kW) at the wheels.

Youtube star, Rob Dahm is known for being the rotary man of the internet and is behind this record achieving RX-7.

At an airport runaway in Battle Creek, Michigan, Dahm crossed the line at 177mph (285km); the fastest anyone has ever been in a rotary powered car on the ½ mile (805m) and beating the previous record’s 174mph.

Mate, she was absolutely flying. Mate, she was absolutely flying.

While the car put out an incredible feat, Dahm believes that the car can go even quicker as he admittedly confessed that he accidently short-shifted to second gear on the run.

This also allowed the challenging car, a Nissan GT-R, to pass the Mazda. Only to be quickly gathered up and left behind.

If you thought this was fast, Rob Dahm is currently working on a 4WD, quad-rotor turbocharged RX-7 which will do much more than break records.

How quick do you think Rob Dahm’s 835hp RX-7 is capable of? Let us know in the comments below.
