Want an electric car but don't want to wait for a Tesla Model 3? Polestar Australia has its 2 in stock and ready to go

The Polestar 2 is available in three forms, with the top-spec Long Range Dual Motor the most popular in Australia so far.

Polestar Australia has only just begun delivering cars to customers, but is already forecasting a thriving year of sales thanks to healthy stock levels and a growing order bank.

Speaking with CarsGuide, Polestar Australia Samantha Johnson said the brand has managed to avoid delays and stock shortages by securing Polestar 2 models ahead of time.

“From a stock-level perspective, we had a strategy of bringing in a lot of stock early because we knew, with all the issues that the companies are having, that we needed to have that stock available,” she said.

“We now have a really good combination of people who are buying from the stock, and those that are configuring something that’s not in stock.

“The order bank has just been astronomical, it’s been really, really good.

“Everything we do, it just seems [the order bank] to go up and up, [it] way outstripped out initial estimates.”

When asked about any delays in vehicle deliveries, like those affecting major models from brands such as Toyota, Hyundai and Kia, Ms Johnson said there are some variants of the Polestar 2 in stock and ready to go now, while customers that might want specific specifications will have to build the car to order.

For reference, the Polestar 2’s main rival, the Tesla Model 3 that is also the best-selling EV in Australia, currently has a wait time of six to nine months as the brand struggles to keep up with growing demand.

Ms Johnson would not be drawn on how much stock Polestar Australia has secured for the year, but CarsGuide understands the brand is aiming to deliver thousands of cars to customers this year.

In contrast, the Australian arms of Hyundai and Kia have only managed to secure less than 1000 units each of the Ioniq 5 and EV6 respectively for their first year of sale.

Ms Johnson also said that Polestar Australia is not limited by supply or allocation, and that the brand is ready to ramp up if interest takes off.

“Our targets that we have at the moment, we’ve got stock secured for that at this point in time,” she said.

“If that changes, we’ll get told at that point in time, but at the moment, no there’s no restrictions.”

The 2022 Polestar 2 range is offered in three flavours, kicking off with the Standard Range, moving to the Long Range and topping out with the Long Range Dual Motor, priced at $59,900 before on-road costs, $64,900 and $69,900 respectively.

Ms Johnson said the top-spec Long Range Dual Motor has been the most popular model, followed by the mid-tier Long Range and then the base Standard Range, but the percentage split between each is slim.

“It’s probably not a huge difference between them, it’s fairly even, but it is top-sided, then middle then bottom – but it’s not a gaping difference,” she said.

“We kind of have something for [everyone], if you want to be at that very premium level, there’s something for that.

“If you’re coming over and want to get into an EV for the first time, then we provide that opportunity as well at the entry level.

“The interest has been very high.”
