EV upstart Polestar has whipped the covers off its latest concept vehicle, with the very cool O2 performance vehicle acting as the "hero car" for the brand.
A concept at this point, but almost certain to feed a production vehicle, the 02 rides on a bespoke aluminium platform for high rigidity and lower weight, and takes the brand's sustainable-materials ethos to the next level.
And, just because it wouldn't be a true concept without something a little bit bonkers, the 02 also comes equipped with an "autonomous cinematic drone" to capture your driving antics.
But first, the nuts and bolts. But to be fair, there aren't a lot of details to dissect here. The Polestar 02 is a hardtop convertible with a two-door, two-plus-two configuration.
How powerful is it? We don't know. How far can it drive between charges? That's a mystery, too. We do know that it rides on a new bonded-aluminium architecture that delivers "taught dynamics" and "direct steering".
So, the drone: a new aerofoil deploys from behind the rear seats, which calms the air around the tail enough for a successful drone launch. Once deployed, the drone can track the car at speeds of up to 90km/h, making you feel like the star of your own Fast and Furious film.
"It's definitely more than just a fancy gag," says Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath.
"I definitely think it serves a really relevant purpose, in terms of making that journey with your car not just about he moment that you enjoy it, but also sharing it , and keeping that memory. And it's much better to do that with a drone filming than with your phone in your hand."
On the sustainability front, the 02 features a “mono-material” approach, in which one material is used for the majority of interior components. In this instance, it's a recycled polyester which is used for all foam, adhesive, 3D knit fibres and non-woven lamination.
So will it happen? Probably. The 02 Concept is a window to the brand's "future potential".
“Polestar O2 is the hero car for our brand,” Mr Ingenlath says.
"This is a taste of what we can design and engineer with the talent and technology we have in-house. It looks incredible, and being able to lower the roof and not hear an engine promises a superb sensation.”
