Toyota Yaris 2020 officially revealed: New light car here in mid-2020

The new Toyota Yaris will be offered with two engine choices in Australia, one of which will be a petrol-electric hybrid.

Just hours after images leaked online of the new-generation Yaris, Toyota has officially lifted the lid on its latest light hatchback.

Headlining the changes to the next Yaris, as predicted, is the introduction of a hybrid powertrain, which Toyota says is derived from the petrol-electric units found in the larger Corolla, Camry and RAV4.

Buyers wishing to forgo electrification can opt for a 1.5-litre three-cylinder ‘Dynamic Force’ petrol engine, which is pared to a continuous variable transmission with traditional first gear, as seen on the Corolla.

The Yaris will be built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) philosophy.

Exact outputs are yet to be revealed, but for reference the current 1.5-litre Yaris outputs 80kW/141Nm while the petrol-electric Prius C Hybrid produces 74kW/169Nm.

The next model to be built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) philosophy following the Prius, Corolla, Camry and RAV4, the Yaris is underpinned by a new GA-B platform that boasts higher body rigidity (+30%) and a lower centre of gravity (-30mm) compared with the outgoing model.

The wheelbase is also stretched another 50mm (2560mm) which will ensure the Yaris “is agile and manoeuvrable in city driving and parking, while contributing to generous occupant space”, according to Toyota.

Safety features will also receive a boast thanks to the addition of a centre airbag, while autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist will be standard on Australian-spec Yaris vehicles.

Inside the new Yaris is a touchscreen multimedia system and a 10.0-inch head-up display.

Other standard features include LED headlights, touchscreen multimedia system and multi-information driver display, while a 10.0-inch head-up display is available as an option.

Pricing is also unknown at this point, but expect the Yaris to climb from its $15,390 before on-road costs starting price in line with the increase in equipment.

Full details will be revealed closer to the Yaris’ mid-2020 Australian launch.
