Audi Australia will become the only market in the world to offer both a petrol and diesel SQ5 mid-size SUV concurrently, with the latter set to arrive in local showrooms around the middle of the year.
Powered by a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6, the SQ5 TDI punches out 255kW/700Nm, while a 48-volt mild-hybrid is also fitted to keep fuel consumption down to 6.8 litres per 100km.
By comparison, the existing SQ5 TFSI, which is powered by a 260kW/500Nm 3.0-litre turbo-petrol V6, drinks 8.7L/100km.
The oil-burning SQ5 also beats its petrol-powered sibling in the zero to 100km/h, hitting the landmark speed in 5.1 seconds compared to 5.4s.
Pricing for the SQ5 TDI however, is still unknown, but Audi Australia not yet able to confirm whether the diesel will be positioned below or above the $99,900 before on-road costs SQ5 TFSI.
The SQ5 will also be one of the only premium diesel-powered performance mid-size SUV, with BMW’s $105,900 X3 M40i and the $112,500 Mercedes-AMG GLC43 powered by 3.0-litre turbo inline six 285kW/500Nm and 287kW/520Nm 3.0-litre V6 respectively. Of note, the Alpina XD3 also uses a diesel 3,0-litre twin-turbo inline six outputting 245kW/700Nm and is priced at $109,900.
Equipment will likely mirror the petrol-powered SQ5, which includes LED headlights, 8.3-inch multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, leather sports seats, wireless smartphone charger and heated front seats.
