Topping the Mitsubishi ASX range for now is the Exceed, which costs $46,490 before on-road costs.

This price point elevates the ASX beyond being a GWM Haval Jolion rival and it now competes with the VW T-Roc, Nissan Qashqai, Honda HR-V and Subaru Crosstrek

The new-generation model is unrelated to the old ASX. That was based on a Mitsubishi platform and this one is based on the current Renault Captur, thanks to the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

Power comes from a Renault 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine offering up 113kW/270Nm. It’s paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels only.

Fuel use is 6.4L/100km, which is not bad. It uses 91 RON fuel and has a 48-litre tank which makes for a theoretical driving range of about 750km.

Along with the Aspire, it comes with a 10.4-inch multimedia screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Google Built-in, DAB digital radio, Bluetooth, six-speaker audio, digital driver display, USB-C ports, proximity key, keyless entry and start, single-zone climate control, power and heated door mirrors and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Beyond that you gain a panoramic sunroof, two-tone paint, leather-appointed seats, heated front seats and power adjust for the driver’s seat.

The ASX comes with Mitsubishi’s extended 10-year/200,000km warranty and 10 years of roadside assistance and capped-price servicing.

Calling out the make and model of every single car he saw as a toddler might have challenged his parents’ patience, but it was clearly a starting point for Tim Nicholson’s journey into automotive journalism. Tim started his journalism career as a staff writer for the Australian Open tennis tournament in 2011, completing an internship as part of his Master of Arts (Media and Communications) at Swinburne University. Tim followed his passion for all things automotive by launching the program, Fender Bender, on community radio station JOY 94.9. This led to an entry role at industry publication GoAuto, before eventually holding the role of Managing Editor. A stint as RACV’s Motoring Editor – including a year as an Australia’s Best Cars judge – provided a different perspective to automotive media, before leading him to CarsGuide where he started as a Contributing Journalist in September 2021, and transitioned to Senior Editor in April 2022, before becoming Managing Editor in December 2022.
