Subaru Forester 2015: Diesel particulate light flashing
By Graham Smith · 07 Jun 2019

Eight weeks ago I purchased a 2015 Subaru Forester diesel from a dealer. Today the diesel particulate light on the dash started flashing. Two local mechanics said it was a big job, $2000-$4000. It has done 40,000 km, is this a warranty issue? What should I do?

Volkswagen Golf 2017: Unhappy with my warranty service
By Graham Smith · 31 May 2019

I brought a new 2017 VW Golf R MK7 in August, 2017. Since taking delivery I have had to return the car four times to have five issues looked at. Although four of the five issues have been repaired under warranty I believe I should be compensated for the inconvenience of returning the car so many times and having to catch courtesy shuttles, public transport and Ubers to drop off and pick it up. I have complained to Volkswagen Australia and asked for the next service to be free, but they have refused any compensation. Even though they fixed the faults, which should have been picked up before the car left the factory, surely manufacturers have to offer compensation?

Toyota Corolla 2010: Paint peeling off
By Graham Smith · 31 May 2019

The paint on the bonnet and boot of my 2010 Toyota Corolla peeling off in sheets. It is embarrassing to drive the vehicle in this condition and also there are sheets of the topcoat peeling off. I was told that this is a manufacturer fault for the paint.

Toyota Prado 2013: Out of warranty rights
By Graham Smith · 31 May 2019

We have a 2013 Toyota Prado owned from new with only 83,000 km on the clock. The radio unit has stopped working and it's continually trying to reboot. We have spoken to our local dealer in regards to this, but apparently it's out of warranty. What are our rights in regards to the warranty, as this is a known issue with the unit?

Mercedes E300 2017: Drivers's seat replacement
By Graham Smith · 24 May 2019

I have a 2017 Mercedes E300 with 50,000 km on the clock. The car is kept in pristine condition. I have premature excessive wear and tear on the driver’s seat right hand side. The left hand side equivalent on the seat has no wear and tear at all. The right side is wearing out because this is the side I enter and exit the car. Despite the car being in pristine condition and the equivalent left side of the seat being faultless Mercedes refuse to cover this under warranty. Speaking to many service advisors and searching through Mercedes Benz forums tells me this not an uncommon problem with these cars. The cost of the repair is over 10k. Is there a cheaper option for replacement?

Range Rover Sport 2014: Transmission replacement
By Graham Smith · 24 May 2019

I am having problems with the Range Rover Sport I purchased in May 2014. It's a HSE 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel with the off-road kit fitted from new. I also purchased the extended warranty package through the dealer dated 29/4/2014, which is covered by Allianz. The vehicle is always serviced by the dealer and I have the engine oil changed at 13,000 km interval rather than the 26,000 km suggested, although not all of the intermediate services are performed by the dealer. The second last service was at 160,000 km where I raised concerns regarding the automatic transmission. They checked it and updated the software. As it is covered by Allianz they also notified Allianz of the transmission work. Whilst driving in Victoria a transmission fault appeared on the screen and no gears could be selected. I disconnected the battery to try to reset the computer. This apparently worked as I was able to select gears and it drove normally and was presented back to the dealer for its 175,000 km service and with several concerns including the transmission faults. They have serviced the vehicle and reset the computer and drove it around, but the faults have reappeared, so I was told that the transmission needed replacement. I was also informed that Allianz would not cover these repairs because it was five days out of the terms of the warranty agreement. I asked for the dealer to download the computer faults, which would show that these occurred during the warranty period. The dealer did present the September 2018 invoice, which showed the transmission concerns that I had raised. They asked JLR to intervene and pay for the transmission replacement, but I was told that they said no as Allianz should be paying. So seven weeks later the dealer still has my vehicle and I am no closer to getting a resolution regarding the repairs.
What should I do?

Holden Commodore 2011:
By Graham Smith · 17 May 2019

I have a 2011 Holden Commodore. The timing chain went when the car had done 80,000 km; they said this was rare but fixed it under warranty. Four years and 50,000 km later it has gone again. Is there any warranty on repairs, or is this common and can I expect it to go in another 50k. I bought the car from a Holden dealer and they have done the servicing. Can you give me advise on how to tackle this problem?

Toyota Kluger 2013: Radio replacement
By Graham Smith · 10 May 2019

I purchased a brand new 2013 Toyota Kluger Altitude with Sat Nav included. Throughout the cars history the radio head unit has been losing satellites, slow to enter addresses and this was reported through all services. Two months ago after a flat battery, the radio had an error message unable to read SD or Program. Toyota service said the radio is dead and its $2000 for a new one. After complaining they offered me one at half price. It is made by Fujitsu but Toyota cannot tell me what the error code "800539" on the screen means. I am suspicious it is only a corrupted SD Card, as it is not recognised via their map upgrade software nor does the card appear as a drive in windows disk manager and I do not get a drive number assigned. I have tried many times through device manager to reload drivers, etc. but the USB reader keeps loading and dropping the SD card and Toyota maps software keeps flicking every time this happens, which indicates it cannot also read the SD card. I am now forced to go through consumer affairs based on an "expected warranty of a product". I see the same issue with Corolla Head units. Has any one experienced this and solved it? I believe Fujitsu who makes the radios should be talking to Toyota and Toyota should know Fujitsu Error codes for the millions of radios they must purchase!

Why BMW won't extend its warranty
By Stephen Corby · 03 May 2019
You might already suspect that the kind of people who buy expensive German cars are different from the rest of us, but you’d still be surprised to hear that, according to BMW at least, one of the things they’re not interested in is a good, long warranty when they buy a new car.

Volkswagen Golf 2016: Warranty
By Graham Smith · 03 May 2019

My mother bought a new Volkswagen Golf Highline with Driver Assist Pack in Feb 2016 with three-years new car warranty. Last August, the active cruise control stopped working with an error message in the dash display. She took it to the selling dealer thinking it would be repaired under warranty, but they charged $550 to align the radar sensor in the lower front grille of the car on their electronic equipment and get it operating again, saying it was incorrectly fitted. I questioned this charge with the dealership, and then with Volkswagen Group Australia, thinking this failure should be under warranty since there was clearly no damage to a very securely mounted plastic sensor, but they say this isn't covered. The best offer we got was from the dealership for a partial refund and only charge the 1.9 hours labour spent on the job at $265, which we haven't accepted yet. Another dealership told me they charge over $800 for this alignment, and something as simple as having a wheel alignment on the car or the shock of hitting a pothole will cause an ACC failure on Volkswagens, with rectification at the owner's expense. Is this really the case, and if the sensor is so unreliable isn't that a design flaw? I notice the update model of the Golf has moved the sensor out of the lower grill area. My mother doesn't remember being told prior to repair that she would be charged and this really wasn't made clear to her until the car was picked up.
