This Hyundai Santa Fe goes outside... it may be some time.

By Tom WhiteTom White

Bet you've never seen a Santa Fe look this tough.

Hyundai reckons its 'near standard' and was built with the sole purpose of crossing Antarctica from Union Camp to McMurdo and back again.

Just a casual 5,800km journey. Just a casual 5,800km journey.

The phrase 'near standard' caused a few furrowed brows in the office. Just looking at the car suggests entirely re-worked suspension components, to suit those massive tyres, complete with front bash plate. Taking on such a trek with stock Santa Fe hardware (not exactly renowned for its hard-core 4WD system) is a bold proposition.

They managed to track down Patrick Bergel, the great grandson of Sir Ernest Shackleton, to be the driver in a somewhat odd, unprompted stunt.

You're probably thinking at this point 'Didn't TopGear already sorta do this at the North Pole with HiLuxes?' You'd be right, though to be fair, Hyundai has never proven it can build anything tough enough for something like this before.

If you need a sneaky reminder though, they do plan to take on the HiLux. Though the working name doesn't exactly yell out 'tough' - Santa Cruz. Really? Sounds like a margharita-sipping FWD 4-cyl convertible.
