The entry-level model to the new Volkswagen Tayron range does an impressive job of not feeling ‘entry level’.
The Tayron 110TSI Life starts below $50,000 but comes well-equipped. Starting at $48,290 (excluding on-road costs) for the 110TSI, it comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and ignition, a power tailgate, digital instrument cluster, a 12.9-inch touchscreen multimedia system, in-built navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a wireless charger. All told, that’s a healthy list of creature comforts.
It’s powered by a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which makes 110kW and 250Nm to deliver adequate, but not overwhelming performance. The is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and sends all its performance via the front wheels only.
There is also a 150TSI Life that's priced at $53,990 (plus on-road costs) and it loses the third seating row, offering seating for five, but gains extra cargo space, a whopping 885 litres in fact.
Motivation for the 150TSI Life comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, making 150kW and 320Nm, and paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and driving all four wheels.
Volkswagen offers a comprehensive safety package for the Tayron, which achieves a five-star EuroNCAP safety rating (and is expected to score the same if tested by ANCAP).
Owners can opt for a VW Care Plan, which costs $1595 for three years and $2910 for five years.
The Tayron is covered by Volkswagen’s five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.
