We recently bought a 1992 2.4-litre Toyota Hiace campervan that's done 150,000 km. Everything seems pretty good except that the clutch shudders in first gear when the engine warms up. We have been told the clutch oils up when the motor gets warm and causes the shudder, and have been given options: burn it off by accelerating and slipping the clutch, fit a new clutch, or don't worry about it as it won't hurt the motor. What do we do?
The best course of action is to fit a new clutch. It might not have had a new clutch fitted in its life so far and if so it's probably on its way out and will need replacing soon anyway.
