Best small hatch under 30k?

I have had a Nissan Maxima Ti 3.5 litre since new in 2005 and absolutely love the car, but it has now turned over 100,000 kilometres and is heavy on fuel running around the suburbs.
Can you offer some advice on which vehicle to buy, choosing between a Nissan Altima, Mazda3, Toyota Camry, Kia Cerato and Hyundai Elantra?
I can get an Altima 2014 Ti 2.5-litre for around $27,000 to $28,000, which is an ex-Nissan executive vehicle.

I would go for the Camry every time after a Maxima. It's $28,990 driveaway for a new car at the moment and is about the same size as the Nissan but much more refined and lighter on fuel.
