The next step in Nissan's electric revolution will be taken at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show with the Hyper Urban concept shaping as a city-friendly Tesla Model 2 rival with a whole bag of tricks up its sleeve.

It's the first in a "series of exciting all-electric concept vehicles" from the Japanese giant, with the automaker obviously keen to follow the Ariya with a fleet of new EVs.

The Hyper Urban, as its name suggests, is a city-focused EV that will target "urban- and suburban-based professionals who prioritise environmental sustainability".

We don't know yet just what will be powering it, but we certainly know what it looks like, with its mega-funky scissor doors, sharp and angular body panels and lounge-like interior - though it must be pointed out that not much of that is likely to make it through to a production model, interior aside.

Also cool is the fact that those angles essentially allow the Hyper Urban to change colour depending on how or where the light hits it, while the interior seats can be collapsed to create a "sofa-like" cabin experience.

Previewing a future in which EVs are mobile power stations, the Hyper Urban is equipped with a AI-powered charge management system, which pairs with its Vehicle-to-Home or Vehicle-to-Grid capabilities to use your on-board battery to either power your house or the grid when you're at home.

In fact, Nissan says you can park the Hyper Urban inside your house, but hasn't yet given any details on how, or why, that might happen.

Nissan will be busy at the Tokyo show, with the brand not just unveiling its electric vehicles, but celebrating its 90th anniversary with a series of special editions, including the Nissan Leaf and X-Trail, as well as hosting the Z Nismo, a GT-R Nismo special edition, and its Formula E racer.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
