MG4 XPower steering issue causes sales halt

The new MG4 XPower needs a steering adjustment

MG has halted deliveries of its MG4 XPower as the brand races to address a steering issue with the sporty electric hatch.

The issue has to do with the MG4 XPower's current steering damper which, according to the brand, needs to be changed following customer feedback regarding the feel of the car at higher speeds.

A steering damper is a shock absorber in a car's steering system which adds better stability.

MG told CarsGuide the issue was raised by overseas owners and that a fix was being carried out for Australian buyers.

"With help of all the rich insights from customers abroad, we've taken this opportunity to put the new steering damper in all XPowers as part of our Pre Delivery Inspection process both in Australia and NZ," an MG Motor Australia and New Zealand spokesperson told CarsGuide.

"While this will cause some delays in delivery, we believe that this upgrade will further enhance the driving experience through improved handling and steering response without compromising safety.

"As part of our ongoing commitment to customer satisfaction, MG Motor Australia and NZ are passing on this upgrade free of charge to both existing and future (MY23 & MY24) XPower customers."

MG told CarsGuide the delay would last two to three weeks as the vehicles are fitted with the new part before delivery to customers.

MG said only 15 owners had received their cars before the steering component could be added, but said all had been contacted and would have the fix carried out as soon as the dampers were available.

The MG4 XPower sits at the top of the MG4 electric hatch line-up with a list price of $59,990.

As the high-performance grade in the MG4 range the XPower has two electric motors with a combined output of 320kW and 600Nm for a 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.8 seconds.

The MG4 XPower's 64kWh battery has a range of 320km (WLPT).

MG4 owners with any concerns should contact their preferred authorised dealer.
