Richard Berry

Senior Journalist

Richard had wanted to be an astrophysicist since he was a small child. He was so determined that he made it through two years of a physics degree, despite zero mathematical ability. Unable to build a laser in an exam and failing to solve the theoretical challenge of keeping a satellite in orbit, his professor noted the success Richard was enjoying in the drama and writing courses he had been doing on the side.

Even though Richard couldn’t see how a degree in story-telling and pretending would ever get him a job, he completed one anyway. Richard has since been a best-selling author and a journalist for 20 years, writing about science, music, finance, cars, TV, art, film, cars, theatre, architecture, food, and cars. He also really likes cars, and has owned an HQ ute, Citroen 2CV, XW Falcon, CV8 Monaro and currently, a 1951 Ford Tudor.

A husband and dad, Richard’s hobbies also include astronomy.

So, I accidentally climbed into the wrong Kia Sportage in the supermarket car park on Thursday. That’s never happened to me before. You know, actually opening the door of a completely random car and getting into it and putting my seat belt on. But that’s how much the regular petrol version of the...Read more
“CHARGING COMPLETE!” announced the robotic voice triumphantly and probably a bit too loudly. But loudly was good because it woke me up and saved me from sleeping through and being locked in the shopping centre car park… See, I’ve taken to charging our Kia EV9 long-term test car at night using the...Read more
Sometimes I think the present is nowhere near as futuristic as I thought it would be when pondering things 20 years ago. And then there are times when the two cars you’re comparing are an electric Mustang SUV and a 580 horsepower Kia that accelerates faster than a Ferrari Enzo. Yep, this comparison...Read more
Congratulations Kia, you win at cars. Because frankly, your EV9 is possibly the best car made since it all started in 1886. Well, that’s my opinion. It’s could be the best car I’ve driven in the almost 15 years I’ve been testing vehicles. And it’s not like I’ve made a rash, uninformed decision. I’...Read more

The world used to belong to the Tesla Model Y with it being pretty much the only mid-sized electric SUV on the market in Australia for some time, but now rivals in the form of Kia's EV5, the Polestar 4, Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra threaten its popularity.
