Cupra Tavascan next for Spanish brand in Australia - here's when the sporty fully electric SUV will take the fight to the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.4

Cupra spills on when its next big launch will hit Australian shores.

At the launch of the Cupra Born electric hatchback, Cupra executives confirmed the Tavascan all-electric coupe SUV would be the next nameplate for the brand to hit Australian shores.

Sharing its MEB underpinnings with Volkswagen's ID.4, which is due before year's end, expect a sportier and more aggressive take on the same formula.

There will be a little bit of a wait though. Speaking to CarsGuide, Cupra's local head of product development, Jeff Shafer, said Tavascan was expected to hit Australian shores around 2025.

"Tavascan, time-frame wise will be our next nameplate," he said. "Early 2025 is my expectation at the moment. Terramar will probably also be 2025, and the Urban Rebel last."

Overseas, the Tavascan will enter production and be launched in 2024, and as a first for the brand, it will primarily be produced in a VW Group factory in China.

Expect a 210kW/545Nm base rear-wheel drive version, or a more performance-spiced all-wheel-drive version, which will combine the 210kW/545Nm rear motor with an 80kW/134Nm front motor. Both have a 77kWh battery good for up to 549km of driving range for the more efficient rear-drive version, and 517km for the AWD variant.

Like the Born, the Tavascan is confirmed to feature dynamic chassis control, an aggressive suspension tune, 19- to 21-inch alloy wheels, and matrix LED headlights.

The Tavascan can charge up at a rate of 135kW on a DC fast charger, which, interestingly is less than the 170kW peak which the Born hatch is capable of, something which CarsGuide understands is due to a difference in battery technology between the two cars, despite them sharing the same platform.

Like the Born, the Tavascan is confirmed to feature dynamic chassis control, an aggressive suspension tune, 19- to 21-inch alloy wheels, and matrix LED headlights. Cupra says the VZ version is capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds, making it faster than the Born hatch, too.

On the inside, there is a 15.0-inch multimedia touchscreen, 12-speaker Sennheiser audio system and expect the same driver-oriented and sustainable approach to interior materials as is featured in the Born. For example, the brand says a textile interior option will be composed of up to 90 per cent recycled polyester.

Cupra executives are particularly excited about the brand's upcoming MEB-based models, as they say they will "embody the spirit of Cupra" and won't look or feel anything like their VW or Skoda relations. The brand points to the Formentor as an example of a car which is ‘Cupra from the ground up'. Unsurprisingly, the aggressively-styled crossover is also its best-selling model thus far, accounting for nearly two-thirds of its volume this year.

In terms of existing nameplates, Cupra looks set to launch a wagon version of its Leon hatch, now that it has established a ‘baseline' customer for the model.

Expect more details on the larger Terramar SUV, which was only recently revealed and confirmed to be the brands last model to feature combustion powertrains, as well as production versions of both the Urban Rebel, a small hatch, and perhaps even the Dark Rebel sports car.
