Peugeot Australia has opened the order books for its 408 GT Fastback Plug-in Hybrid with pricing and local specification confirmed for the swoopy new wagon that’s scheduled to arrive in local showrooms in the third quarter of this year.

With a manufacturer’s list price of $67,990, the turbo-petrol five-seat hybrid is priced competitively against the lower end of Audi’s Q5 line-up as well as the Genesis GV70, Lexus NX and Volvo XC60.

Worth noting the 408 GT Fastback is priced appreciably higher than its Citroen C5 X Shine twin-under-the-skin, which is pitched at $57,670, before on-road costs.

Interior ambient lighting is adjustable through eight colours, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth connectivity is standard as is 3D navigation, Nappa leather seat trim and electric front seats (heated with massage function on both sides).

Power is provided by the combination of a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbo petrol engine and an electric motor incorporated into the eight-speed automatic transmission which sends drive to the front wheels only. Combined outputs are 165kW/360Nm, with 0-100km/h covered in a claimed 7.8 seconds.

Peugeot claims a (WLTP) electric-only range of 60km and although the 408 is a plug-in hybrid it’s unable to accept DC fast charging, with recharge times for the car’s 12.4kWh lithium-ion battery quoted as 3.5 hours for three-phase 16A (11kW) and single-phase 32A (7.4kW) wallbox-type outlets, or approximately six hours when connected to a domestic 10A plug.

The official combined cycle fuel economy figure is just 1.3L/100km, although that number can only be achieved in real-world driving if the hybrid battery is constantly recharged.

Peugeot has opened a pre-order page on its website where prospective buyers can configure the car prior to initiating contact with a dealer.
