Trimmed down Range Rover Velar range priced for Australia

The Velar now has a more paired back design and simplified variant line-up, with prices creeping up across the range.

Land Rover has revealed an updated version of its Velar mid-size luxury SUV, with a tweaked and more minimalist design, new ‘pixel’-style LED light fittings, and a simplified range.

The Velar now consists of three trim levels and a total of three mild-hybrid powertrain choices and one plug-in hybrid (PHEV)

The base S has been dropped from the range, while the top-spec Edition has been replaced by an Autobiography grade.

The new entry point to the range is the Dynamic SE which is available with all four engine choices, a P250 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 184kW/365Nm, a D300 3.0-litre diesel producing 221kW/650Nm, a P400 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol, producing 294kW/550Nm, and at the top of the range, the P400e plug-in hybrid which combines a 2.0-litre turbo engine with an electric motor for a total output of 297kW/640Nm.

The next trim up is the Dynamic HSE, which is only available with the P400 six-cylinder petrol, or P400e PHEV drivetrain. At the top of the range is the Autobiography, which is only available with the P400 six-cylinder petrol engine.

All Range Rover Velars drive all four wheels via an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission. All cars equipped with six-cylinder engines are equipped with adaptive dynamics as standard, while the brand’s renowned Terrain Response 2 is standard across the range.

The P400e drivetrain includes a 105kW electric motor, and offers up to 69km of electric-only driving range courtesy of a 19.2kWh battery pack. It is unusual in that it is offered not only with a 7kW AC charger as is usually standard on PHEV models allowing a 2.5hr charge time, but also fast DC charging capability which lets it charge in around half an hour on a 50kW connection.

Meanwhile, the Velar’s interior has been significantly overhauled to include the brand’s latest steering wheel with touch capacitive controls, and the new larger 11.4-inch curved display in place of the complex dual-screen display in the outgoing car. The interior design has also been significantly simplified to comply with the brand’s new “clean and reductive” design ethos.

The Velar now consists of three trim levels.

Other upgrades for the Velar range include active noise cancelling for the cabin, an air purifying option, and the inclusion of connected services, like Amazon Alexa and over-the-air software updates, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android auto and a wireless charging bay.

New wheels and cabin trim choices, including a vegan interior option have also been added.

The Velar range includes active noise cancelling for the cabin.

Standard features on the base SE include 20-inch wheels, a fixed panoramic glass roof, LED headlights and DRLs, Meridian-branded stereo system, perforated leather seats, and 14-way power adjust for the front seats. The HSE upgrades these standard items to 21-inch wheels, pixel LED headlights, ‘Windsor’ leather seat trim, and 20-way power adjust for the front seats, with a sportier exterior bodykit. Finally, the Autobiography adds 22-inch wheels, a sliding panoramic sunroof, an improved 3D sound system, and 20-way adjust front seats with message functions.

With the deletion of the entry-grade Velar local pricing has also jumped, now starting from $106,150 before on-road costs, nearly $10,000 more expensive than the outgoing base P250 R-Dynamic S ($96,600).

Land Rover Australia says to expect deliveries of the new Velar to commence in Q3 of 2023.
