Coming to Oz? New MG electric car revealed alongside MG3 Hybrid and new sub-brand, including SUVs to take on Tesla

The L6 debuted globally under MG’s new IM brand and could make its way to Australia.

Alongside the new MG3 hatchback revealed overnight, the formerly British brand showed off a series of sedans, a mix of seen-before and new, including one or two that may make their way to Australia.

The MG9 sedan and the IM L6, both electric cars, were mentioned in press material supplied to CarsGuide after the reveal of the MG3, the latter having made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show alongside the MG3 hatch.

The MG9 is a large electric car that, while seen previously badged as the Rising F7 - Rising being another brand alongside MG under SAIC’s umbrella - is set to join the global market as a luxury offering from the brand.

Alongside it, the L6 comes from a new sub-brand under MG called IM, or Intelligent Mobility,  which also consists of an L7 sedan and LS6 and LS7 SUVs.

Details are slim, but MG had confirmed a few specifications for the L6 upon its debut, including a 0-100km/h sprint in less than three seconds and driving ranges of more than 600km with a lithium-ion battery, or more than 800km with a solid state battery.

These projected ranges are yet to be locked in, but are estimated based on WLTP testing, which is stricter than China’s CLTC test method.

The MG9 is set to join the global market as a luxury offering from the brand.

“When IM launches in Europe in 2025 it will operate in the premium sector with a clear focus on executive saloons and larger SUVs,” said a statement from MG.

While not explicitly confirmed for Australia, an MG spokesperson told media “Australian and NZ specifications will vary to what is in the European press release”, suggesting more could be on the way to Australia than just the MG3.

The MG3, coming in with a hybrid drivetrain and updated tech and safety, is expected to launch around the middle of 2024 here in Australia.
