One of the fastest-growing brands in recent Australian automotive history, MG, is set for a big year in 2024 as entirely new models and updated versions of a few of its models are set for a 2024 launch.
A spokesperson for MG Motor Australia confirmed to CarsGuide there will be three models launching in 2024, with the MG3 and Cyberster leading the charge for passenger cars and a new-gen HS SUV coming too.
While the Cyberster is a fully electric convertible sports car that's been revealed and confirmed with pricing for markets like China and the UK, it was yet to be publicly confirmed for Australia until now.
The MG3 on the other hand is already available in Australia, having been on sale for years as a popular choice in the light-car segment. A new generation is the big news for the MG3, with the next version of the small hatchback to come to Australia with an electrified drivetrain option.
The HS is also one of the brand's older models, having arrived here in February 2020, although an update to the mid-size SUV including its plug-in hybrid variant was revealed earlier this year and confirmed as Australia-bound at the time.
While it was originally set for a late-2023 launch, the updated HS will now apparently arrive with the MG3 and Cyberster in 2024.
"At this stage, we can share the confirmed line up for next year (2024) to be an all new MG3 available in both ICE and Hybrid, as well as the all new HS and Cyberster," a spokesperson told CarsGuide.
The MG3, Cyberster, and HS aren't the only new additions to MG's offering' in 2024, with the spokesperson confirming the MG5 will also soon come with a "safety pack" that will likely address some of the criticisms levelled at the car regarding its lack of active safety equipment.
"Where and when possible, we will add improvements to our products for our models during their life cycle. This includes the MG5 and are currently working on an additional safety pack to be featured on this model in the future."
While the safety pack should be a welcome addition to safety-conscious buyers who are interested in the budget-friendly model, those who are keen on the electric wagon version of the model available in Europe are out of luck.
"We've had a lot of questions around the electric MG5 wagon 'Estate' available in Europe, however this model won't be sold in Australia or NZ."
Just about rounding out commentary on all of MG's mainstay models available in Australia, the brand's local spokesperson also confirmed to CarsGuide the new ZS small SUV, set to be brought up to date with MG's new design language, is on the cards but timing is not confirmed for Australia.
"The new ZS is definitely in our sights. We haven't made any firm decision on when we will see an updated ZS in Australia, however, the ZS's success shows there is a continued demand for affordable SUVs."
The brand is going from strength to strength in Australia, having sold 54,512 cars in the year so far to the end of November, up from the 44,388 it sold in the same period last year. This has gained it a 4.9 per cent market share, up from last year's 4.5.
MG is currently the seventh most popular car brand for buyers in Australia in 2023, trailing fifth-place Mitsubishi (58,377 sold YTD, a 5.2 per cent share) relatively closely.
