An electric Land Rover Defender, but not British: Ineos to build its new 4X4 electric car 'Grenadier sibling' model with manufacturing partner in Austria

Pro-Brexit billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos will build its next model in Austria, not the UK.

The company responsible for the Grenadier, the spiritual successor to the original Land Rover Defender, has confirmed it will build an electric 4X4 model and partner with Austrian firm Magna to do so.

Expected to be the electric version of the Ineos Grenadier, the new model will start production at Magna’s facility in Graz, Austria in 2026.

Ineos CEO Lynn Calder says Magna continues to be the partner of choice for manufacturing moving into the brand’s upcoming new model.

“Having worked together on the engineering of the Grenadier, we’ve seen first-hand the value of applying Magna’s agility, knowledge, and experience to a complete vehicle development programme,” Calder said.

“Deepening our collaboration is a natural next step as we use the Grenadier as a springboard for our continued growth as a global automotive brand with this third model line.”

Ineos’ founder, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is the billionaire chairman of chemicals company Ineos, and was a supporter of the Brexit movement.

Before the Grenadier began production in France in 2022, Ratcliffe had said the model would be built in the UK in a plant in Bridgend, Wales.
