2022 Ineos Grenadier details drop! Australian pricing and launch details confirmed for super-rugged LandCruiser rival

The Ineos Grenadier will soon be climbing a mountain near you.

Ineos Automotive has detailed is Australian launch plans for the rough-and-tough Grenadier, with the off-road-focused SUV set to touch down in Australia in Q4 2022.

And when it does, it will be wearing a starting price of around $84,500 — which isn’t just cheaper than a brand-new LandCruiser 300 Series (which starts at $89,900 for the GX), but also cheaper than a used LandCruiser 200 Series, which regularly command six-figure sums on the second-hand market.

Uniquely, there will be no price penalty should you opt for petrol or diesel, with both engine choices to be priced identically.

That said, it is more expensive than a new Land Rover Defender, which starts at around $71k. It was this model that was said to inspire the Grenadier, when the Ineos founder was lamenting the switch from old Defender to new in a London pub called The Grenadier, before deciding to build his own, more old-school-feeling rival.

The range will then climb from there, but the brand say the line-up won’t “disappear into stratospheric pricing”, as it aims to sell around 1000 units Down Under in its first 12 months.

Ineos is set to open online reservations on September 30 for already-engaged customers, before opening to the broader public on October 14. Sales will officially open in July 2022, a few months ahead of vehicle arrivals.

So what do you get for your investment? You could cruelly describe the Grenadier as a kind of Frankenstein’s monster of off-road SUVs, given Ineos has collected components from existing companies (engines from BMW, dampers and gearbox from ZF, etc), and outsourced much of the heavy engineering lifting to Magna Steyr. But the reality is something a whole lot better than that.

This is no backyard project. Ineos says it has searched the world for the leaders in their individual fields, then compiled this best-in-class equipment to build a vehicle it says will be among the toughest on the planet.

The brand will back its vehicle in Australia with the five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, and a five-year prepaid service plan, as well as what Ineos describes as its “aftersales blueprint”, which will be support by Bosch servicing in Australia.

“It’s been built bottom-up from that blueprint,” says Ineos APAC sales and marketing chief, Justin Hocevar.

“Before we envisioned how we would sell vehicles, we wanted know how we would be able to support them with parts and information and everything people need to keep their vehicle on the road.”

The brand will launch with 16 sales and service partners across Australia in Q4 next year, covering all capital cities, as well as regional hubs like Cairns, Geelong, Newcastle and Gippsland and Launceston. They will be supported by the existing Bosch service footprint in Australia, with the brand promising that “by year three, 98 per cent of the Australian population will be in reasonable proximity to a sales and service outlet.”

Buyers can also choose to simply order online, or face to face in fairly simple showrooms that put the focus on the vehicle, not the furniture.

We know already that this ladder-frame SUV, which is built in Wales, will be powered by BMW’s 3.0-litre, six-cylinder petrol (around 212kW and 450Nm) and diesel (around 185kW and 550Nm) engines, paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic gearboxes, and will land with permanent 4WD, and three locking differentials. The vehicle has also been designed to be as “analogue as possible”, with an easy-clean interior with rubber flooring, drainage plugs, a reduced number of ECUs and a physical key. That said, you will find a 12.3-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Full pricing and specification will be revealed closer to the vehicle's launch.
