2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric model range expands as single-motor version arrives to battle Mercedes-Benz EQA and Lexus UX300e

The new single-motor Volvo XC40 Recharge gives buyers a more affordable Pure Electric option.

The price of entry for a Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric has just become slightly more affordable, with the launch of a new single-motor variant.

Volvo Australia has added a second all-electric grade to the XC40 small SUV range following strong demand for the dual-motor version that went on sale here in August.

Pricing for the single-motor XC40 Recharge Pure Electric starts at $72,990 before on-road costs and is offered in one specification level.

The new single-motor XC40 undercuts premium electric small SUV rivals like the Mercedes-Benz EQA250 ($76,800) and Lexus UX300e (from $74,000).

As a result of the new variant arriving, the dual-motor XC40 has copped a price increase of $3000 to $79,990, but Volvo says it comes with additional features like sustainable upholstery, pixel headlight technology, new wheels, and visual tweaks to the front-end design.

The single-motor XC40 Recharge has total power and torque outputs of 170kW/330Nm and a 69kWh battery delivering a driving range of 380km on the WLTP protocol.

In comparison, the dual-motor XC40 produces 300kW/660Nm, and has a 78kWh battery for a 418km driving range.

Standard gear in the single-motor XC40 includes 19-inch black diamond-cut alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, heated front and rear seats and heated steering wheel, keyless entry and start, wireless device charging, and Google services as part of its next-gen multimedia system.

The XC40 Recharge Pure Electric will be joined by the coupe-style C40 electric crossover that is expected by the end of 2022.

Volvo Car Australia managing director Stephen Connor says the company’s local arm has secured a minimum production growth of 20 per cent for 2022 as he pushes for more stock to meet Australia demand for Volvo products.

The Chinese-owned Swedish band is 25 per cent ahead of last year in year-to-date sales and is expected to end 2021 with about 9000 sales in Australia.

The XC40 is the second best-selling small premium SUV to the end of November 2021 with 3561 sales, trailing the Audi Q3 on 5315.
