Series 3 Falcon wagon brakes

The last time I took my AU Series 3 Falcon wagon in for a service the dealer said the brake pads were okay. I bought it new and it's now done 103,000 km, is that exceptional or is it the norm nowadays with better materials? Admittedly most of these kilometres have been highway with very little or no use of the brakes, which seems to reinforce my belief that country cars are better used car buys because they haven't faced the rigours of stop start low speed city driving. Do you agree? Also, a part of a car that is out of sight and out of mind is the catalytic converter; when do these have to be replaced?

Getting 103,000 km out of a set of pads is quite remarkable, and probably due to the car being used in the bush without the stop-start traffic. It's quite normal today to be replacing pads every 50,000 km or so and replacing discs every second pad change. Country cars can be good buys because of the less stressful life they tend to lead. There is no replacement time set down for cat converters, when they go they tend to collapse internally, and when it happened to a car of mine a while back it
blocked the exhaust and brought the car to a halt.
