Mazda BT-50 2012: persistent water build-up

The power train warning lamp on my 2012 Mazda BT-50 recently came on with a loss of power. I pulled over and called Mazda, and was advised to drive slowly back to home and bring it in to the dealer’s the following Monday. They checked the car out and said that the filter had water in it, replaced it and sent me on my way. I didn’t make it 6km down the road before it completely broke down. I had the car towed back to them and they advised the entire fuel system would have to be replaced at a cost of $12,500 and it would not be covered by warranty. I have only ever had the car serviced by Mazda and have followed the manual for when water was in the separator, ie. pull over and let out the water. This I advised them I was doing every two weeks to a month and they said it was normal for common-rail diesels. I have spoken to other mechanics, who said they would have checked it out if they’d heard the number of times I have to release water from the trap and that it shouldn’t have been driven out of the dealers when it was taken in without cleaning out the fuel tank to prevent the fuel system from failing. Is this the case? If so is there any chance it should be under warranty? The fuel company has said that their last test was compliant to Australian standards.

You shouldn’t need to be draining water out of the system every couple of weeks; that says there is something wrong. Your mechanic is right; the dealer should have flushed the fuel system out to make sure there was no water in the system when you drove the car away. I would go back to the dealer and talk to him about some sort of compensation. They haven’t been as diligent as they should have been.
