Both Holden’s newest SUV offering and BMW’s stalwart X5 have received maximum five-star ANCAP safety ratings in the authority’s latest round of testing.
The 2019 Holden Acadia impressed with curtain airbags covering all three rows, as well as an impressive standard active safety suite which performed “very well” in test conditions. ANCAP was particularly impressed with the Acadia’s lane keep assist system.
As a result the Acadia scored higher in the ‘vulnerable road user protection’ and ‘safety assist’ categories than two recently tested competitors, the Mazda CX-8 and Hyundai Santa Fe.
The five-star rating applies to all Acadia variants.
The BMW X5 was also awarded a maximum five-star rating, with ANCAP noting its impressive autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system which scored “close to full points” in both day and night scenarios.
The X5 lost points, however, in the ‘adult occupant protection’ category due to “concerns with the deployment of the knee airbag”. It was also noted that lane keep assist is not available across the range, limiting its ‘safety assist’ score.

The X5’s five-star rating also only applies to 3.0-litre diesel variants for the time being. Its main competitors - the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class - have not been tested to the current standards.
