Form a Q? 2024 Audi Q8 SUV gains plug-in hybrid power to take on BMW X5, Volvo XC60 hybrid cars

The Q8 60 TFSIe features the S line and a black exterior package as standard.

Fresh off re-entering the plug-in hybrid market with the electrified Q5, Audi Australia has added another PHEV SUV to its local line-up.

The Q8 large SUV now comes with a plug-in hybrid variant, dubbed the Q8 60 TFSIe, and it’s hitting Audi dealerships in the fourth quarter of this year.

It is priced from $148,375 before on-road costs, which means it sits above the petrol-powered Q8 55 TFSI ($133,569) but is more affordable than the sporty SQ8 ($167,269).

It isn’t the only premium, large SUV available with plug-in hybrid power. There's also the BMW X5 xDrive50e from $149,900 before on-roads, Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid from $154,600, and the Volvo XC90 Recharge at $125,990.

Audi says the Q8 PHEV has an electric-only driving range of 59km on the NEDC cycle.

Under the bonnet of the Q8 is a 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine, and a 17.9kWh lithium-ion battery, making for a combined system output of 340kW and 700Nm. That’s very close to the SQ8’s figures of 370kW/770Nm.

Inside you get power sports front seats and Valcona leather upholstery.

The Q8 60 TFSIe can cover the 0-100km/h dash in just 5.4 seconds and has an official combined fuel consumption figure of 2.6 litres per 100 kilometres, while emitting 60g/km of CO2.

The Q8 has a number of driving modes, including EV, Hybrid, Charge, Hold and Auto, and it comes standard with a charging cable for household and industrial power sockets.

Other standard gear includes 21-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels, red brake callipers, HD Matrix LED headlights, front and rear dynamic indicators, S line exterior package and a black exterior package.

Inside you get power sports front seats, Valcona leather upholstery, three-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting and a power tailgate.

Safety wise it features auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, active lane keeping aid, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, exit warning, lane change warning, rear cross-traffic alert and a collision avoidance system.

Audi has just launched a plug-in version of the Q5 - the Q5 55 TFSIe S line - from $102,900 before on-road costs.

Calling out the make and model of every single car he saw as a toddler might have challenged his parents’ patience, but it was clearly a starting point for Tim Nicholson’s journey into automotive journalism. Tim launched the program, Fender Bender, on community radio station JOY 94.9 during completion of his Master of Arts (Media and Communications). This led to an entry role at industry publication GoAuto, before eventually taking the role of Managing Editor. A stint as RACV’s Motoring Editor – including being an Australia’s Best Cars judge – provided a different perspective to automotive media, before leading him to CarsGuide where he started as a Contributing Journalist in September 2021, and transitioned to Senior Editor in April 2022, before becoming Managing Editor in December 2022.
