Alfa Romeo speeds towards electric car line-up by 2027

The Tonale PHEV was Alfa Romeo's first step into the electrified world.

Alfa Romeo is racing towards a zero-carbon emissions future, revealing its plans to offer an EV-only line-up of vehicles by 2027.

In pole position to achieve a fully electric range of vehicles, the Italian marque has announced it will offer electrified versions of the Giulia, Stelvio, Tonale and two other models in five years' time, making Alfa Romeo one of the first brands to pivot to full electrification.

Alfa Romeo head of product Daniel Guzzafame described the move from plug-in hybrid (PHEV) to full electric as a transition for the brand, with factors like taxes driving the change.

"Especially in certain markets now, you cannot deliver a car that has 200 grams of CO2 because people will not buy it. Why? Because there are taxes on it," he said.

Next year, Alfa plans to release its Tonale PHEV before debuting its highly anticipated first BEV (battery electric vehicle) model in 2024. And it’s looking like the new flagship electric car will be a sporty SUV with Guzzafame saying the new model will be “something bigger”.

The brand will also launch its last new internal-combustion car in 2024 before focusing purely on PHEVs.

Describing internal combustion cars as a "portion that is being killed, whether we like it or not", Guzzafame said Alfa Romeo’s decision to transition from PHEV to eventually full EV was "the right choice for us" until Alfa can deliver on range, speed of charge and the right level of power across its range.

In terms of Alfa Romeo’s battery technology, the Italian automaker will incorporate non-fungible token (NFT) tech across its electrified range. Debuted on the recently released Tonale, the NFT-equipped battery system records vehicle data, storing information like the number of cycles used on the battery as well as service history, with the customer’s consent.

The Tonale is set to arrive on Australian shores in 2023, followed by the latest Giulia and Stelvio models.

In October, Alfa announced it was back in black, securing a safe financial future for the next 10 years. According to Carlos Tavares, CEO of multinational car corporation and owner of Alfa Romeo, Stellantis, 2022 will be a record year for Alfa Romeo.
