A digital driver's licence will bring NSW one step closer to a wallet-free world.

Soon those living in select postcodes in Sydney’s east will be able to trial a digital driver licence via the Service NSW app on their phone.

The trial, announced earlier this month, will be rolled out across Bondi, Bondi Junction, Bronte, Clovelly, Coogee, Randwick and Waverly.

Service NSW says this area was chosen due to the "tech savvy" nature of the local populace and the density of licenced venues.

The digital licence will be valid for entry into pubs and clubs as well as roadside police checks, although for the duration of the trial participants will still be required to carry plastic licences or identification cards.

The purpose of the trial is to test the system for problems prior to its state-wide rollout planned for 2019.

The Sydney trial comes off the back of a ‘successful’ trial of 1400 participants in Dubbo, which has been running since mid-2017. Service NSW says the Dubbo trial has had an "83 per cent customer satisfaction rating".

The benefits of the digital licence are claimed to include convenience (of not having to carry a licence and be able to update your details in real-time) as well as security. Service NSW believes the digital licence will give individuals better control over their personal records.
