Peugeot's 2024 launch calendar: More hybrids, EVs and commercial vehicles on the way

Peugeot has big plans for the 2024 model year in Australia, with an expanded and refreshed line-up of hybrids and EVs.

Peugeot has just launched its first fully electric passenger car, the e-2008 SUV, and commercial vehicle, the e-Partner small van, but has much more planned for the next 12 months as it renews its range with new and updated models.

The e-2008 will be followed by its smaller hatchback relation, the e-208, which will be electric-only, and you can also expect the 408 mid-size coupe SUV and e-Expert mid-size van to join later in the year.

The incoming range renewal will place Peugeot in a good position to challenge its semi-premium rivals out of Europe, with Volkswagen in particular lagging behind on its delivery of the ID.4 SUV and ID.3 hatch. Meanwhile, emerging rival Cupra has been able to secure hybrid and EV supply as a new threat in this space, and Peugeot’s French arch-rival, Renault is also rolling out a range of EVs in 2024.

Check out our list below for what to expect, when to expect it, and what rivals it will face when it arrives.

The e-208 packs a 51kWh battery good for a WLTP-rated 400km driving range.

e-208 - early 2024

The e-208 is slated for an official arrival Down Under in 2024. While the e-208 originally went on-sale with the second-generation combustion 208 range in 2019 in Europe, in Australia we will receive a facelifted version with improved power outputs and an increased driving range alongside a nip-and-tuck when it comes to design and new multimedia software.

The fully electric variant will be the only version of the hatch offered in Australia, packing a 51kWh battery good for a WLTP-rated 400km driving range, and a new motor outputting 115kW/260Nm. The brand confirms expressions of interest are now open on its website.

Peugeot has not stated what price it will land on for the hatchback, although speaking to CarsGuide at the launch of the e-2008, Peugeot Australia boss Kate Gillies said: “Where will it appeal to our consumers? That’s a premium offering and premium specification.”

When it arrives its rivals will include the Nissan Leaf (from $50,990), Fiat 500e (from $52,500), Mini Cooper SE (from $64,975), and Cupra Born (from $59,990).

The MY24 e-2008 will pack a 54kWh battery good for a WLTP-certified 405km driving range.

2008 and e-2008 (MY24 facelift) - 2024

You read that right, while the e-2008 just launched in Australia priced at $59,990 before on-roads, a significant update is already in the works with similar upgrades to the e-208 below it.

Expect an increase in battery capacity to 54kWh good for a WLTP-certified 405km driving range, and an increase to motor outputs (now, 116kW up from 100kW), as well as a new face and wheel designs, with new software on the inside.

Meanwhile, combustion models have a carryover 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, with the addition of an MHEV 48-volt boosted version which is said to allow a 15 per cent reduction in fuel consumption.

Peugeot Australia won’t yet be drawn on timing or pricing for the updated small SUV in the Australian market, but given cars destined for our market are built on a European production line in Vigo, Spain, don’t expect the new 2008 to be too far behind its 208 hatch relation.

Expressions of interest for the 408 plug-in hybrid are now open on Peugeot’s Australian website.

408 PHEV - early 2024

The latest addition to Peugeot’s global lineup is the 408 midsize coupe-style SUV. Said to preview the future design direction of the entire Peugeot brand, the 408 will launch overseas with the choice of a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo engine, or the larger 1.6-litre four-cylinder unit also used in the 508 or its more mainstream SUV alternative, the 3008.

The version which will arrive in Australia, at least initially, will be the plug-in hybrid though, as confirmed by the brand’s communications manager, Chloe Fraser, although lower-spec combustion versions are not yet ruled out for the future.

It will also likely be in a high-grade GT spec if the brand’s most recent arrivals are anything to go by, with prices looking like they could be $70k or above using overseas specs as a guide. Expect Australia-specific pricing and spec closer to this car’s launch, toward the end of 2023.

The 408’s closest rival looks to be the Renault Arkana (from $37,500) although the Renault is not offered in the same high-grade PHEV as the 408 will be initially. A more price- and segment-appropriate rival might be the plug-in hybrid Cupra Formentor VZe (from $70,990).

Expressions of interest are now open on Peugeot’s Australian website.

The 508 has been confirmed for an Australian arrival.

508 (MY24 facelift) - 2024

A facelifted version of the brand’s flagship 508 sedan and wagon was revealed earlier this year, and has been confirmed for an Australian arrival, although the brand is yet to be drawn on timing.

The upgrades include a significant exterior overhaul with more futuristic features, cool-looking aerodynamic wheels, and an upgrade to the latest software for its digital functions on the inside.

Information from overseas has the new version of the 508 carrying over its engine and drivetrain options from the pre-update car, consisting of a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder developing 165kW/300Nm, and a plug-in hybrid which produces 165kW/360Nm.

Currently Australia only receives the plug-in hybrid, priced from $81,610 before on-road costs. Peugeot has also ruled out the internationally-top-spec Peugeot Sport Engineered version with a more powerful PHEV drivetrain.

Expect more details on the e-Expert later in 2024. (MY23 model pictured)

e-Expert - 2024

Following on from the smaller e-Partner which shares a $59,990 price tag with the e-2008 SUV, the size-up e-Expert will join Peugeot’s range during the course of 2024.

It’s looking likely we’ll receive the heavily updated version which has yet to be revealed, with a new, more digitised interior, and a new face which will no doubt sync the mid-size van up with the brand’s current design language.

The current version uses the same 100kW/260Nm front motor as the e-2008 with the choice of either a 50kWh or 75kWh battery with a maximum unladen driving range of 330km. Rivals in Australia currently include the Mercedes-Benz eVito 112 (from $91,051), or the larger Ford e-Transit 420L (from $104,990).

Peugeot won’t yet be drawn on timing or pricing, but expect more details on the e-Expert later in 2024.
