New Ford Transit 2021 detailed: Trail version emerges with Ranger Raptor styling

The Ford Transit Custom Trail wears the same front grille as its Ranger Raptor stablemate, though won't be as off-road capable.

Ford has unveiled new Trail versions to its Transit and Transit Custom vans, adding extra off-road ability and a tough new look.

A new Quaife mechanical limited-slip differential is included in rear-drive Trail grades, improving traction on loose, slipper and soft surfaces, according to Ford.

However, an all-wheel-drive version of the Transit Trail is also available, which can send up to 50 per cent of torque to the front wheels to aid grip.

The Transit Trail also scores ‘Slippery’ and ‘Mud/Rut’ drive modes, and can lock its torque split 50:50 front and rear.

To compliment, the off-road-focused vans are kitted out with extra black-plastic cladding on the outside, as well as the Ranger Raptor’s black grille with big, bold ‘Ford’ lettering.

Black 16-inch wheels, roof rails and side steps are also included.

Inside, all Trail versions get a full leather interior, power-folding mirrors and air-conditioning.

Powering all Trail variants is a 2.0-litre EcoBlue turbo-diesel engine, available in 97kW, 125kW and 136kW tune, while the Transit Custom Trail is also available with 48-volt mild-hybrid options.

With various body styles and wheelbases on offer, the Transit Trail boasts a gross vehicle mass between 3000-3400kg.

The Transit Trail is only available in the UK for now, with Ford Australia telling CarsGuide that “we’re pleased with how Australian customers have embraced Transit for all their needs, from the capable Transit to the versatile Transit Custom Sport, including new double cab in van options”.

“We have no news to share about any future plans.”
