Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram caught up in large round of recalls

Thousands of vehicles are caught up in a long round of recalls that involves everything from Takata airbags to incorrectly-printed tyre placards.

Mercedes-Benz has announced an extended recall for “beta” series Takata airbags, which includes SLK and SLS sports cars, A-Class hatchbacks as well as GL- and ML-Class SUVs manufactured between 2005 and 2012.

For these vehicles, the propellant used in the airbag can degrade, causing its housing to explode or rupture in the case of an accident. This can result in fragments being expelled along with the airbag in an accident.

Popular Mercedes-Benz SUV models are embroiled in the Takata airbag recall.

It is a potentially fatal fault which affects a total of 13,499 Mercedes-Benz vehicles. A sweeping list of recalls also affects Jeep and Dodge vehicles built between 2007 and 2010.

The KK Jeep Cherokee is affected by multiple issues in the recall.

The Dodge Nitro built during this period could have a windscreen wiper failure – causing the wipers to simply not function, as well as an incorrect tyre placard.

The Jeep Cherokee built in this period could have its windshield detach due to an incorrect adhesive used in the factory (12 vehicles), a brake pedal failure (55 vehicles) as well as the incorrectly printed tyre placard (the same fault as the Dodge Nitro).

Meanwhile, the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass built for the 2007 model year have a fault in the headlights that could cause them not to level properly (767 vehicles).

Over at Ram Trucks, 2500 and 3500 models built for the 2010 model year have a faulty mounting bolt in the steering which could cause “loss of steering control” – the brand says a rattling will be audible before the steering fails.

Finally, the Toyota Prius C hatch built in 2018 or 2019 could have its 12V battery stop charging due to “improper soldering” in the car’s DC converter.

The recall affects just 49 cars, concerned owners can check if their car requires a recall by cross-checking its VIN against the list on the ACCC’s Product Safety portal here. Toyota will also be contacting owners via mail.
