Look out HiLux and Ranger - the all-new Ram 1500 is ready to rumble! Here's when you'll be able to buy the V8-powered jumbo truck in Australia

The finishing touches are being put on the all-new Ram 1500.

The all-new Ram 1500 is nearly ready to launch in Australia, with the full-size answer to the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger now expected to hit dealerships in a matter of weeks.

CarsGuide understands the team at Ram Trucks Australia is in the final stages of pre-production for its new truck, with the DT Ram 1500 to be ready to rumble within weeks.

The new model is expected to shift the goal posts in a segment essentially pioneered by the Ateco Group - the brand's importer - debuting a host of new technology, safety and style features.

The brand has already opened the order books for the new truck, with deliveries expected to begin in at the end of March or early in April.

CarsGuide understands the new DT model - which has already launched in the USA - will be a petrol-only affair, and one fitted with the brand's even more powerful 5.7-litre V8 petrol engine, generating 291kW and 556Nm. Stateside, there's also the option of a new EcoDiesel, but that engine is unlikely to arrive.

The DT model will also welcome a major tech overhaul in the cabin, with select models to get a Head-Up Display, as well as 12.0-inch touchscreen arranged in a portrait style.

As previously reported, the arrival of the DT gives Ram a two-prong strategy in Australia, as it seeks to steal sales from traditional utes like the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara and Isuzu D-Max. The 1500 currently on sale will continue to be sold here, with the DT to act as a halo trim for the range.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed for the new Ram 1500.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
