Jeep teases all-new models: Is the brand preparing an electric Hummer rival and a new compact model to take on the Suzuki Jimny?

This new all-electric model will soon join the Jeep range.

Is this Jeep’s answer to the all-new GMC Hummer?

This silhouette of a new addition to the American off-road brand’s line-up was teased not once, but twice, during the Stellantis EV Day overnight. It will sit on the new STLA Large platform, like the also teased new Ram Toyota HiLux-rivalling ute, and will be an all-new model - not a spin-off of an existing Jeep.

Stellantis’ chief US designer, Ralph Gilles, called the new model a “very capable off-roading white space opportunity vehicle” while showing a silhouette of what appears to be a Hummer-like vehicle. The outline suggests a shorter bonnet than a Wrangler, with a more raked back windscreen but with the same squared off rear end with spare wheel on the back, giving it a Jeep family shape.

Building it on the STLA Large platform means it will be capable of boasting a range of up to 800km and with power options ranging from 150-330kW, while also being all-wheel drive.

It will fall under the brand’s 4xe electric push, which will see a zero-emission variant of every Jeep model by 2025. While no specific timeframe was given for this all-new model’s arrival in showrooms, Gilles did include it as one of eight STLA Large vehicles that will launch within the next three to five years. That suggests it will be hitting the roads - and trails - no later than 2026.

As for what the new model will be called, that’s a mystery, but it’s perhaps worth noting that during its presentation Jeep produced a video that showcased how off-roading could evolve over the next decade. The video showed off potential technologies such as vehicle-to-vehicle charging, autonomous off-road driving, drone pairing to scan the road ahead and biometric recognition of the driver. The vehicle used in the video was Wrangler-based but displayed the name ‘Freedom’ on the bonnet where model variant nameplate typically appears. So there’s a chance this new addition will be the Jeep Freedom, but it could simply be a way to tie-in with its new brand slogan ‘Zero Emissions Freedom’ that Stellantis also revealed.

The bigger question left by the video presentation was the silhouette of a second mystery model that was shown for only a few seconds. The shape appears to be a compact model, with very short front and rear overhangs but a more steeply raked windscreen and more detailed rear end than what we’d typically expect from a two-door Wrangler. It raises the possibility that Jeep could be preparing a new compact model to replace the Renegade and take on the Suzuki Jimny.

This new compact model would likely be based on the STLA Small platform that’s primarily designed for Peugeot, Citroen and Fiat small cars. However, given the modular nature of the STLA architecture it could adopt both front- and all-wheel drive powertrains with up to 500km of range.

Stay tuned for more details on this potential pair of new Jeeps.

Steve has been obsessed with all things automotive for as long as he can remember. Literally, his earliest memory is of a car. Having amassed an enviable Hot Wheels and Matchbox collection as a kid he moved into the world of real cars with an Alfa Romeo Alfasud. Despite that questionable history he carved a successful career for himself, firstly covering motorsport for Auto Action magazine before eventually moving into the automotive publishing world with CarsGuide in 2008. Since then he's worked for every major outlet, having work published in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Drive.com.au, Street Machine, V8X and F1 Racing. These days he still loves cars as much as he did as a kid and has an Alfa Romeo Alfasud in the garage (but not the same one as before... that's a long story).
