Hyundai goes BIG: New Concept Seven is the three-row, seven-seat EV that's bigger than a LandCruiser 300 Series

The Concept Seven is Hyundai's biggest EV yet.

Hyundai is betting big on its all-electric future. And we mean that literally, with the brand today unveiling the massive Concept Seven three-row SUV with a wheelbase that dwarfs even the new Toyota LC300.

Officially a concept for now (though reports point to it entering production within two years) the Concept Seven was revealed at LA's AutoMobility show this morning.

How big are talking? Very. While its exterior dimensions are yet to be confirmed, we do know the brand – using its E-GMP platform – has managed to push the wheels further towards each corner, resulting in a massive 3200mm wheelbase.

Unsurprisingly, that means there's heaps of space inside, too. While the concept car its set up like a luxurious lounge room – all oversized armchairs and space to stretch out – the Concept Seven is designed to preview a proper three-row, seven-seat electric SUV.

Hyundai is yet to drill down on the motors and battery, but has said the Seven has been engineered to deliver a 480km driving range between charges. And when it is time to top up, the brand says it will go from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 20 minutes, when plugged into the appropriate fast charger.

Its sleek-looking design is also fitted with hidden "Active Air Flaps", which can deploy when brake cooling is required, then disappear again for better aerodynamics.

In that massive cabin, you'll find bamboo wood and carpet, as well as copper and what the brand calls "hygienically treated fabric", essentially instilling the interior with anti-bacterial properties.

“Seven dares to break from the beaten path,” says SangYup Lee, Senior Vice President, Head of Hyundai Global Design. “It paves the way forward for what an SUV needs to become in the EV era with a unique aerodynamic, pure form that does not compromise on its rugged personality. The interior opens up a new dimension of space that cares for its passenger as a family living space.”

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
