Genesis Australia has added a second body-style to the first-generation G70 mid-sizer, with the new Shooting Brake wagon joining the recently facelifted sedan in local showrooms.

Priced from $79,000 plus on-road costs, the Shooting Brake commands a $2000 premium over the similarly specified sedan with a 179kW/353Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine.

Yep, the Shooting Brake isn’t available with the sedan’s 274kW/510Nm 3.3-litre twin-turbo petrol V6, although it does share its eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive layout.

Standard equipment in the Shooting Brake includes Matrix LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, Brembo brakes, keyless entry, a rear limited-slip differential and a hands-free power tailgate.

Inside, push-button start, a panoramic sunroof, a 10.25-inch multimedia system, satellite navigation (with live traffic), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, digital radio, a 15-speaker Lexicon sound system and a 12.3-inch 3D digital instrument cluster feature.

And then there's a wireless smartphone charger, dual-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel (with a power-adjustable column), power-adjustable front seats (with heating and cooling), heated rear seats, quilted Nappa leather upholstery and a suede headliner.

Advanced driver-assist systems extend to autonomous emergency braking (with intersection assist and pedestrian and cyclist detection), lane-keep and steering assist, adaptive cruise control (with stop and go functionality), high-beam assist and driver attention warning.

The Safety package also includes active blind-spot monitoring (with cameras), active rear cross-traffic alert, surround-view cameras, Safe Exit Warning and Rear Occupant Alert.

The Sport Line Styling Package is a no-cost option, with it ushering in a unique grille insert and 19-inch Dark alloy wheels as well as dark-chrome exterior trim and sports pedals.

As with all other Genesis Australia models, the new BMW 3 Series Touring, Audi A4 Avant and Volvo V60 rival comes with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and five years of roadside assistance. It’s also free to service for the first five years or 50,000km.

As reported, the Shooting Brake naturally separates itself from the sedan with a larger boot, with its cargo capacity (VDA) 135L superior, at 465L.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
