I AM considering buying a new car. My brain says Mazda 6 sports luxury, but my heart says Mazda RX8. I have heard concerns regarding the RX8 -- high fuel consumption approaching V8 figures (15 litres/100km) and high oil consumption (using only Mazda oil for rotaries costing about $80 between services). Could you shed some light on these concerns? Also, how reliable are rotary engines compared with V6s? My current 1993 Mazda 626 V6 hatch is the best car I have ever owned.
BUY the RX8. Rotary engines are typically heavier on fuel than a four-cylinder engine, and your V8 comparison is probably correct. They have also been a little heavier on oil than a piston engine, but that's not a problem. The RX8 is a high-performance sports car and needs oils that protect it against hard driving.
