Extended warranty void on a Jeep

My 80-year-old dad bought a Jeep Patriot a while back and at the time the salesman convinced him to pay for an extended warranty for the vehicle. We had a light flash on the dashboard recently and I took it in to be fixed. The dealer said it was a fault in the ABS unit and quoted me about $1000 to fix it. The factory warranty ran out in about September last year, but I assumed it was still covered under the extended warranty. But the service guy said the dealer warranty was void because we hadn't had the car serviced at the dealership. Is that right? The car has only 23,000km. Is there anything I can do?

All extended warranties tie you to the dealership for service, so unfortunately the service department is within its rights to charge you. But I've been in touch with the new head of Fiat Chrysler Australia and he says he will do everything he can to help. Jeep is trying to improve its customer service.
