I would be going directly to VW with the piston problem. It is a known one with that engine and in my view should be covered, at least in part by VW. The statutory laws that apply to new goods don't apply to secondhand ones, so it's going to be hard to make a case on the back of those laws. I would be pressing VW hard, looking to get a goodwill deal.
You might just be able to buy a 2010 Subaru Liberty wagon for $15,000, more likely you would have to settle for a 2009 model. The Liberty is a good choice. I would be wary of suggesting the Golf wagon, servicing is relatively expensive and you need to be careful when choosing your car to ensure there are no hidden bugs that might prove expensive down the track. The Kia Sportage is certainly worth a look and should fit within your budget.
Volkswagen Australia spokesman Karl Gehling says: "Our customer care team has been in touch and arranged a loan car for her while we get her car in to address the issues she has raised. We will cover the replacement costs of her audio unit and have confirmed this with the customer."
The clutch issue you have experienced (twice) is a common one with the DSG and the replacement clutch that is to be fitted should be covered by warranty. In other countries such has been the trouble with the DSG that VW has extended the warranty on it to 10 years. Approach VW and request a free extended warranty from them.
The GTI is a high performance vehicle with aggressive wheel alignment settings to achieve the high level of handling it has. That works against tyre life, which might very well explain why you're having your problems with the tyres. First, check the wheel alignment to make sure it's correctly set within the specs, and then consult a specialist tyre technician to see what tyres might be available to improve the life you're getting.
