Snake bite: The top five Viper V10 engine swaps

An 8.3-litre V10 engine swap? These people must be crazy.

The Dodge Viper is coming to the end of its life which means so is the legendary V10 engine.

Such a pity especially seeing that the Dodge Viper ACR just recorded the third fastest lap time at the Nürburgring.

However, all is not lost as there are plenty of people crazy enough to pack these V10s into cars to create some wild builds. Here at the top five.

5. BMW M3 E46

Built as a drift car, the 8.3-litre V10 barely fits into the engine bay of this M3, a hole even needed to be cut out of the bonnet.

The car looks rough (as with most drift cars) with a stripped-out interior where the only luxury is the dials that have been taken from a second-gen Viper.

4. Toyota Supra

LS swapping JDM sports cars is in danger of becoming mainstream, so here is the next step.

You'll find a few examples floating around the internet of Mazda RX-7s, Honda S2000s and Nissan Silvas that have the heart of a Viper.

Dubbed the "Vipra", this Supra has a turbo strapped to the V10 and despite having 345 drag radials on the rear, the owner clearly doesn't have a hard time breaking traction.

3. Saab 9-3 Wagon

It isn’t too often you see a Saab on the road these days and the chance of catching a 9-3 wagon is even rarer especially one with a V10.

This car started out as a shell before being placed onto of the underpinnings of a Dodge Viper, creating one of the world’s coolest sleepers.

2. Chrysler PT Cruiser

The Chrysler PT Cruiser was a lame duck when it left the factory but this one's got a bit more spice.

Converted into a ute with a 500hp (373kW) V10 up front, this PT Cruiser would wag its tail more than a dog excited for dinner.

1. Volvo 242DL

Talk about an unconventional build, whoever came up with the idea of placing the Viper's 8.3-litre V10 into a Volvo is a madman.

Staring out with a 383ci (6.2-litre) Chevy V8, the engine proved problematic and the owner switched to Mopar power.

The engine size was increased to 8.6-litres and two turbochargers boost outputs to 850kW and 1800Nm. Mind blowing.
