The M badge here tells you that this is the high-performance member of the new X3 family.

With the same five-door, five-seat body, the M50 reverts to a mild hybrid driveline, but one that incorporates a 3.0-litre, turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, eight-speed automatic and permanent all-wheel drive. With the electric motor and petrol engine working at their maximum, there’s 293kW of power and 580Nm of torque.

Despite the huge performance, efficiency is high with an official combined fuel consumption figure of 8.2 litres per 100km.

As the flagship grade, the M50 gains 21-inch alloy wheels, a superior stereo, quad exhaust tips, and the M Sport package that includes M-branded things like seat belts and brake calipers.

Safety includes all the latest driver-aid technology including auto emergency braking (AEB), rear cross-traffic alert, lane keeping assistance, 360-degree camera, parking sensors and cameras.

Despite it’s performance orientation and hybrid driveline, the M50 can still tow up to 2000kg on a braked trailer.

The X3 M50 xDrive costs $128,900.

Morley’s attentions turned to cars and motoring fairly early on in his life. The realisation that the most complex motor vehicle was easier to both understand and control than the simplest human-being, set his career in motion. Growing up in the country gave the young Morley a form of motoring freedom unmatched these days, as well as many trees to dodge. With a background in newspapers, the move to motoring journalism was no less logical than Clive Palmer’s move into politics, and at times, at least as funny.
