GAC Reviews

GAC, short for Guangzhou Automobile Group, is one of China’s biggest state-owned carmakers. It was founded in 1997 and originally focused on commercial vehicles. By the mid-2000s, GAC had expanded into passenger cars through joint ventures with Honda, Toyota and Mitsubishi, helping it grow fast and build up local expertise.

In 2010, GAC launched its own brand, Trumpchi, starting with sedans and later moving into SUVs and EVs. The company also introduced Aion, its electric-only sub-brand, aimed at competing in China’s booming new-energy market. GAC’s design and R&D centres in China and Los Angeles have helped shape a more global identity.

The brand has signalled plans to enter right-hand-drive markets, including Australia. GAC vehicles are known in China for value, tech and design, but local success will depend on dealer support and how models stack up on price and safety. If it lands here, it’ll likely go up against BYD, MG and Chery.
