This is what Stephen Ottley liked most about this particular version of the Cupra Leon: A rare wagon option, Efficient PHEV powertrain, Roomy boot
The Cupra Leon hatch and Sportstourer feature the same interior design, fit and finish. The interior is stylish with a thoughtful, practical layout. The seats are comfortable and there’s cupholders, sizeable door pockets, a lidded centre console box and a wireless smartphone charging pad.
The Cupra Leon range is available in four standard colours - Glacial White, Magnetic Tech (grey), Fiord Blue and Mightnight Black. There are three premium paints which are a $620 option - Taiga Grey, Graphene Grey and Dark Void. And three matt paints for $2650 - Century Bronze, Magnetic Tech and Enceladus Grey.
Cupra is a performance brand so has claimed 0-100km/h time for all Leon variants. The Leon S takes 8.7 seconds, the Leon Sportstourer VZe 7.3 seconds and the Leon VZx is the quickest at 5.7 seconds.
The three Cupra Leon models all feature a different powertrain, as each is targeting a distinctly different buyer.
The Leon S is powered by a 110kW/250Nm 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with mild-hybrid assistance.
The Leon VZx has 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that makes 221kW/400Nm.
The Leon VZe Sportstourer is a plug-in hybrid, powered by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired to an electric motor to make 200kW and 400Nm.
Interior space in the Cupra Leon hatch and Sportstourer are similar, but the real difference is the cargo capacity. The hatch offers 344L (or 888L with the rear seats down), while the Sportstourer has a more generous 470L/1045L.
Standard equipment across the Cupra Leon range includes alloy wheels, LED headlights, keyless entry and ignition, heated sports bucket seats, tri-zone climate control and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
The Leon S features a six-speaker sound system, while the Leon VZx and Leon Sportstourer VZe get a 12-speaker Sennheiser stereo and leather-appointed seats, amongst other upgrades.
The Cupra Leon offers three different powertrains with wildly different driving range.
The Leon S fuel use is 5.4L/100km and has a theoretical range of 833km thanks to its mild-hybrid engine. The Leon VZx is more performance focused and has fuel use of 7.6L/100km and a theoretical 650km range.
The Leon Sportstourer VZe has a plug-in hybrid powertrain with 121km of electric-only range and on-paper efficiency of just 0.4L/100km.
