The LS-U grade sits on the rung below the top-of-the-range LS-T in the D-Max line-up and it’s available with several different body styles and drivetrains. The most affordable LS-U variant is the 4x2 Crew Cab High-Ride with an auto at $43,600 (a manual gearbox isn’t available).

All 4x4 D-Maxs are High Ride and the Space Cab ute in the LS-U grade with the manual gearbox is $46,200 (auto is $2100 more). The 4x4 Crew Cab ute with the manual is $48,300 (auto is $2100 more).

Standard features on the LS-U grade include an 8.0-inch display with built in sat nav and reversing camera, projector lens headlights, LED running lights and tail lights, front fog lights, chrome radiator grille, lockable chrome tailgate, hill descent control, climate control, pollen air filter, power windows, keyless entry, leather wrapped steering wheel and carpet flooring.

D-Max models have the same 130kW/430Nm 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. It’s a new engine developed for Australian by Isuzu and arrived with the February 2017 update to the D-Max which also saw the five-speed manual gearbox and five-speed automatic transmission swapped for a new six-speed manual and six-speed auto.

Braked towing capacity is 3500kg and clearance is 225mm.

The update is the first major change to the D-max since this generation of the ute was introduced in 2012, and also incorporates new styling to the front of the vehicle.

Laura Berry is a best-selling Australian author and journalist who has been reviewing cars for almost 20 years.  Much more of a Hot Wheels girl than a Matchbox one, she grew up in a family that would spend every Friday night sitting on a hill at the Speedway watching Sprintcars slide in the mud. The best part of this was being given money to buy stickers. She loved stickers… which then turned into a love of tattoos. Out of boredom, she learnt to drive at 14 on her parents’ bush property in what can only be described as a heavily modified Toyota LandCruiser.   At the age of 17 she was told she couldn’t have a V8 Holden ute by her mother, which led to Laura and her father laying in the driveway for three months building a six-cylinder ute with more horsepower than a V8.   Since then she’s only ever owned V8s, with a Ford Falcon XW and a Holden Monaro CV8 part of her collection over the years.  Laura has authored two books and worked as a journalist writing about science, cars, music, TV, cars, art, food, cars, finance, architecture, theatre, cars, film and cars. But, mainly cars.   A wife and parent, her current daily driver is a chopped 1951 Ford Tudor with a V8.
