The Q5 TFSI is the entry-level version of the premium mid-size SUV at launch, starting from $81,000 before on-roads.

It replaces the entry-level TDI, swapping diesel power for petrol. In this case, it is a front-wheel-drive 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol (150kW/340Nm), driving the front wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission.

However, for this new-generation version, it also adds hybrid assist thanks to Audi's new MHEV+ electrified powertrain.

Standard features include 19-inch alloy wheels, matrix LED headlights, an 11.9-inch digital dash, and a 14.5-inch multimedia touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

It also has online connectivity with built-in navigation, an eight-speaker sound system, leather interior trim with brushed aluminium inlays, a wireless phone charger, 360-degree parking camera, a power adjust driver's seat, heated front seats, tri-zone climate, as well as keyless entry and push-start ignition.

The MHEV+ system, which provides an additional 18kW/230Nm of electric assistance, powered by a 1.7kWh battery pack, helps the Q5 TFSI achieve fuel efficiency of 5.7L/100km.

Boot space measures 520 litres with five seats up or up to 1473 litres with the second row folded down. There is no spare, just a tyre repair kit under the floor.

Audi's Q5 is covered by a five-year and unlimited kilometre warranty, while servicing is at 12 months or 15,000km intervals.

Servicing is cheapest when five years are purchased up-front, with the TFSI costing $3520 ($704 per year) to keep on the road.

Tom’s way into motoring journalism was anything but straightforward despite annoying his parents to no end as a child by identifying makes and models with ease, and acquiring a large collection of Matchbox models. Other interests took over in the intervening years, including tinkering with electronics and computers, and an interest in the past, which eventually culminated in a Bachelor of Arts and Science from the University Of Sydney with a major in Ancient History. During this time, Tom was exposed to all sorts of cars by working as a valet and eventually the Bell Captain at The Star casino in Sydney. He then went on another side-quest, studying law at Macquarie University before applying for a job at CarsGuide. After being hired Tom worked his way up the ranks in a variety of roles and refined his craft, now serving as CarsGuide's Deputy News Editor, with special interests in new technologies and electric vehicles, as well as emerging trends from China. Tom has been recognised by his peers as the EV Journalist of the Year at the 2026 Newspress Australia Awards. He’s personally owned a selection of wheels from a 1981 Holden Gemini to a 2009 Ford Falcon, through to his current 2011 Subaru Forester and many others in between.
